How Introverts Can Handle Small Talk

Small talk is Introverts commonly avoid small talk because they feel like they are not good at it. However, small talk is an important social skill that even introverts should master. Small talk is like a social lubricant. It helps people warm up to a deeper level of conversation, or in some situations, merely helps alleviate awkward silence.

When you dismiss the value and refuse to make small talk, you have two options, and neither is ideal:

  1. Immediately jump into a deep level of conversation before the other person feels comfortable.
  2. Ignore the other person completely.

Small talk is common when people are in close proximity with each other, such as in an elevator, a standing in a line, or virtually on a conference call. In these situations, if someone initiates small talk with you, reciprocate so that you don’t come across as rude! Reply to them while maintaining a pleasant expression and eye contact. Establish your reputation as being a warm and friendly person.

Introverts can be better at small talk by preparing questions ahead of time when possible.  Unlike extroverts who don’t need to prepare because they are never at a loss for words, introverts have a more difficult time thinking on their feet. As an introvert, think about some questions you can ask someone that you may see when going to work or other social functions. And don’t only prepare questions, but also mentally prepare comments about your own life that you can offer when someone asks about you. This will prevent you from giving the proverbial answer, “I’m fine!”

Learn to become better at this important social skill that is sometimes a warm-up to deeper social connections with others! And even if it does not lead to deeper conversation, it is an important skill to master when in the presence of others.
